Day 4 Camp Chloë Wilton
Marijke returned this morning just in time for our hike today! We went for a morning swim, ate breakfast, and then packed our lunches for the hike. The counselors packed all the food, water, and extra clothing in their bags so the girls could move more easily without a backpack.
We hiked Bald Mt., which is about 1 mile up to the top. It took us about an hour with lots of stops and games/challenges along the way. There were several opportunities to turn back but the girls were determined to finish and they all made it to the top! For many of the girls this was their first real hike! The view at the top was BEAUTIFUL. We could see 360 degrees around us and the wild blueberries were abundant. The girls think Chloë has a "blueberry problem" so they restricted her blueberry picking time. On the way down though, Rosie, Meredith, Sophie and Lena were kind enough to pick Chloë blueberries to make up for her not being allowed to pick them at the top.
After the hike we went for a swim in the lake and then had a nice long rest time! When they were sufficiently rested, we baked chocolate chip cookies. After they had cooled we put ice cream between them and froze them to have later for dessert. While Chloë, Marijke, and Rob prepared dinner for the tired girls, they made miniature books and read on their own.
We sat around the fire for dinner and then Chloë read Nancy Drew before going on a sunset boat ride around the lake. While we were on the lake we saw 8 loons up close! Colette, Chloë's mom also came to say hi tonight!
Although it had cooled off by the time we got back from the boat ride, the girls requested one last swim before bed so we swam and then read and drank tea before going to sleep. About 10 minutes after lights out, Chloë and Marijke smelled a skunk. They were a bit worried because Rob was outside but they thought nothing of it. A few seconds later the girls burst out of their room saying it stunk like a skunk. Luckily Rob had not gotten sprayed but a skunk had definitely come to visit! It was probably because we have left so many crumbs out by the fire recently...we will have to clean up better tomorrow!
